The Newcastle Diamonds travelled to the Scunthorpe Scorpions for the first time in 2017 last night after the home side were hit hard a week ago when Redcar beat them on their own shale, 39-50, unfortunately the Lincolnshire side had obviously been read the riot act as they stormed to an early 13-5 lead after three races.

Former Diamond Tero Aarnio took Heat One over Newcastle guest, Richie Worrall in a shared 3-3 before a nasty crash stopped the second as Ben Hopwood fell with new Diamond Alfie Bowtel given no chance of missing his stricken team mate, wrecking his bike with Hopwood ending up in the ambulance and withdrawn from the meeting as the re-run gave a home 5-1, he same score as Heat Three.

Heat Five provided the best entertainment of the night with Worrall and and Ashley Morris taking up the early 1-5 lead but Ryan Douglas took a thrilling dive under both Diamonds on the second lap before Morris was overhauled by Josh Auty who sealed a Scunthorpe 4-2 taking the score to 20-10.

That 10-point gap meant Newcastle's team manager instantly roared into action nominating his other guest, Kyle Howarth as a tactical ride for double points in Heat Six, and a great move it was as the guest was dominant from the off to take six points over Aarnio and Lewis Kerr in a 3-6 advantage to Newcastle narrowing the home lead to 23-16.

Carl Wilkinson fell in Heat Seven when second on the third bend and Lewis Rose had to lay down to avoid the fallen Scorpion with Wilkinson excluded from the re-run won by Douglas over Rose and Ludvig Lindgren in the shared 3-3.

Aarnio is in the best form of his career and proved it by winning Heat Eight well over Josh Bailey who zipped past both Morris and Bowtell for a home maximum followed by a Heat Nine  4-2 won by Douglas again in a fantastic four laps as Howarth tried everything he could in second but the heat advantage to Scunthorpe took the score to 35-22.

The following three heats were all shared, Worrall winning the third attempt to run Heat 11, but after 12 with the score 44-31 Newcastle's cause was all but lost despite Kerr's awful night continuing for Scunthorpe in Heat 13 as he broke the tapes and had to go off a 15 metre handicap as he still took third over Howarth in the 2-4 that confirmed the inevitable with two to go, and the score standing at 47-34.

Newcastle team manager George English said: "We're still suffering travel sickness away from home and we have to start quelling the away trip nerves before it's too late. Our guests Richie Worrall and Kyle Howarth proved their worth and confirming we had made the right choices and young Alfie Bowtell had his bike wiped out in Heat two yet rode his heart out in his seven rides and he really was a huge positive on a night of otherwise disappointment."
