Newcastle's Pairs challenge sadly came to an end after the 20 qualification heats at Sheffield on Sunday afternoon when Stuart Robson and Ludvig Lindgren finished fourth in Group B on 13 point (5 and 8 respectively).

Skipper Lindgren was in for the injured Steve Worrall who was spending his Sunday getting his damaged wrist x-rayed and the club are awaiting word on his fitness for the vital SGB Championship Knockout Cup match quarter final second leg against Glasgow Tigers on Monday (with a 7.30pm start), but was hopeful he would get an all-clear.

Result:
1st: Sheffield Tigers
2nd: Redcar Bears
= 3rd: Scunthorpe and Glasgow

Newcastle Diamonds had to make a late change after Steve Worrall had to withdraw following a heavy crash at Workington in the long, drawn-out league defeat (46-44) which also put the Comets' Craig Cook out of the pairs.

Skipper Ludvig Lindgren took Worrall's place to partner Stuart Robsonin Group B, the winners and runners-up going to meet the top two from Group A in the semi finals.

Newcastle opened in in Heat Two against Edinburgh but Sam Masters and Ricky Wells made no mistake as the pair left Lindgren and Robson standing in an untroubled 7-2 heat win for the Monarchs with the 4,3,2,0 scoring in pairs events.

The Diamonds' duo were next out in Heat Six which was Berwick's first race of the night, but in a contrast of fortunes Robson and Lindgen regained their pride as they shot out way ahead of Doolan and Howe for a 7-2 of their own.

Lindgren and Robson's third ride was against home side Sheffield's Lasse Bjerre and Kyle Howarth in the 12th,  and were away for seven points until Bjerre went wide coming into the first bend, passing both Diamonds while Howarth took both the Newcastle men off bend four to reverse the 7-2 to one of their own as Newcastle's total went to 11 with one qualification ride left.

Newcastle finished their qualification rides in Heat 18 against their local rivals, Redcar, and while Robson tried an inside nip up under Wright, it was a short-lived challenge as the Diamonds found themselves on the wrong side of another 7-2 ending their Pairs adventure on 13 points.
